But they were too childish and no mention of juvenile coloring was mentioned, so I contacted the seller and they offered me a further discount. However, I found that some of the full-page artworks, which originally were in black and white, had marker drawn over them! I know I shouldn’t be reviewing a product based on my transaction with a seller, but I thought I should point that out as it seemed out of place.Īt first it seemed that’s how it was done, that perhaps Sakai let his children or something color on the pages and decided to include them in this compendium. The edition I bought was used, but it came in fantastic condition, and the price I paid made me forgive the tiny bends in the corner. The collection is an oversized tome with notes, sketches, official artwork, and other Sakai tidbits. Sakai’s limited editions go for a hefty price on the aftermarket-something which I learned the hard way. Any true UY collector knows that when a hardcover version is spotted at a fair price it must be snagged quickly. I was fortunate enough to snag one of the hardcover versions. His favorite movie is Satomi Hakkenden (1959). He also made a futuristic spin-off series Space Usagi. First published in 1984, the comic continues to this day, with Sakai as the lone author and nearly-sole artist (Tom Luth serves as the main colorist on the series, and Sergio Aragonés has made two small contributions to the series: the story "Broken Ritual" is based on an idea by Aragonés, and he served as a guest inker for the black and white version of the story "Return to Adachi Plain" that is featured in the Volume 11 trade paper-back edition of Usagi Yojimbo). He began his career by lettering comic books (notably Groo the Wanderer by Sergio Aragonés and Mark Evanier) and became famous with the production of Usagi Yojimbo, the epic saga of Miyamoto Usagi, a samurai rabbit living in late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth-century Japan. He and his wife, Sharon, presently reside and work in Pasadena. He later attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.
